WHAT SHOULD I DO TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CANCER?

  • Avoid all forms of tobacco.
  • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Stay active by doing physical activity on a regular basis.
  • Eat healthy foods, lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol (if you consume alcohol)
  • Protect your skin from the sun.
  • Know your risks, your medical history and that of your family.
  • Go to routine doctor’s appointments for medical checkups and cancer screening.

WHAT IS EARLY DETECTION?

It is the search for a malignant lesion before symptoms appear. Detecting cancer at an early stage.

It is estimated that more than half of cancer deaths could have been avoided if patients had undergone early detection.

FOR WHO IS EARLY DETECTION IS RECOMMENDED?

It is recommended that everybody perform early detection. In practice,  the age of the patient to start early detection should be adjusted to family history or genetic predisposition cases.

BUT I FEEL FINE, DO I NEED TO WORRY ABOUT CANCER?

Early detection is recommended to all people, regardless of age, race or gender.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS AND EARLY SIGNS OF CANCER?

Some of the possible signs and symptoms of cancer may include:

  • Thickening or lump in a testicle.
  • New moles or changes in their size, irregular edges or color of a previous mole.
  • Sore that does not heal.
  • Persistent cough or hoarseness.
  • Pain, dripping, blood or difficult to urinate.
  • Increased frequency of urination.
  • Periods of constipation alternating with diarrhea, blood or difficulty evacuating.
  • Indigestion that does not go away or difficulty swallowing food.
  • Weight loss for no apparent reason.
  • Abnormal bleeding or discharge from mouth, nose, or rectum.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EARLY DETECTION TESTS?

You can reduce the chances of developing cancer:

  • Knowing your family history of cancer.
  • Perform testicular palpation.
  • Undergo determination of prostate-specific antigen starting at 50 years old.
  • Prostate trans-rectal ultrasound.
  • Colonoscopy if there are persistent changes in evacuation.
  • Control your weight, exercise.
